Black Arc Snapback Hat

This snapback New Era hat features an embroidered star shape in black with an orange outline on the front, a black embroidered speaker stack inspired by Gary Simmons' sculpture, ‘Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark’ (2014 – ongoing) on the right side of the hat, and black embroidered exhibition title on the left. Simmons uses the star shape motif to create multi-layered meanings. Whether it's a shooting star or a fallen star, it can imply notions of dreams, hopes, and loss. 

The sculpture serves as a literal and metaphorical platform for music and performance. Inspired by Black Ark, Lee 'Scratch' Perry's famed Jamaican studio, the speakers are composed of materials sourced from the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
