40+ Years. One Visionary Force. Infinite Impact.
Step into the power and poetry of one of the most influential American artists of our time. Carrie Mae Weems: A Great Turn in the Possible is the most comprehensive collection of her work to date—spanning four transformative decades of bold, brilliant storytelling through photography, installation, video, fabric, and more.

From the intimate truths of Family Pictures and Stories to the iconic Kitchen Table Series, Weems has masterfully explored race, gender, family, class, and the ripple effects of power with unwavering depth and soul. This sweeping volume includes career-defining works like Colored People, Ain’t Jokin’, From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried, The Jefferson Suite, Slow Fade to Black, Constructing History, and The Obama Project—all framed by essays from cultural powerhouses Fred Moten and LaCharles Ward, and a deeply personal visual essay by the artist herself. Weems isn’t just an image maker—she’s a moral force. This book captures the urgency, elegance, and brilliance that have made her work essential to museums, classrooms, and conversations around the world.

This volume is published in conjunction with the acclaimed exhibition Carrie Mae Weems: The Evidence of Things Not Seen, organized by Fundación MAPFRE in collaboration with Fundación Foto Colectania (Barcelona) and Württembergischer Kunstverein (Stuttgart). Carrie Mae Weems (born 1953) has received numerous awards, grants, and fellowships. Her work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She lives and works in Brooklyn and Syracuse, New York.
