What began in 2015 as an introduction to the Black rodeo grew into more than a decade of photographing and building relationships within this vibrant community. Traveling across the United States, McClellan’s camera captures moments of connection, individuality, self-expression, and incredible athleticism—both inside and beyond the rodeo arena.

The title Eight Seconds refers to the length of time a bull rider must stay on a bull to earn a qualified ride. In McClellan’s photographs, those eight seconds become a powerful symbol of presence, courage, and the intensity of life in motion. His images celebrate a culture where connections to animals, land, heritage, and personal identity come together to create a distinctly contemporary vision of the American West. Ivan McClellan (b. 1982) is a Portland-based photojournalist whose work has appeared in Andscape and Fast Company. He has also worked as a designer for major brands and organizations including Nike, Adidas, Disney, and the U.S. National Soccer Team.

Originally published in 2024 to great acclaim, this newly expanded and resequenced second edition features 91 previously unpublished photographs, along with a new introduction and foreword. The result is a fresh and immersive journey through a community redefining what the American cowboy looks like today.
