Bring a little conceptual art and playful experimentation to your fridge, locker, or magnetic display with the John Baldessari Magnet Set of 12! Created exclusively for Pérez Art Museum Miami’s exhibition John Baldessari: The End of the Line, this set showcases the artist’s iconic photographic work Throwing Three Balls in the Air to Get a Straight Line (Best of Thirty-Six Attempts) (1973).
Featuring 12 individual magnets, the set captures Baldessari’s wonderfully simple yet thought-provoking experiment: throwing three orange balls into the air and photographing the results as he attempted to create a perfectly straight line. The playful sequence explores the tension between chance and control, turning an everyday action into a clever investigation of order, repetition, and artistic process.
John Baldessari (1931–2020) was a pioneering American conceptual artist who challenged traditional ideas about what art could be. Beginning as a painter, Baldessari eventually incorporated photography, text, found imagery, and video into his work, creating witty and unconventional pieces that questioned the relationship between images and language. His playful approach and willingness to experiment made him one of the most influential conceptual artists of his generation.
The End of the Line marks the first major survey of Baldessari in South Florida, bringing together 40 works spanning painting, photography, video, and installation. The exhibition highlights his groundbreaking work from the 1960s and 1970s, his radical Cremation Project, his serial approach to photography, and his lifelong fascination with the relationship between language and image.
Now you can take a piece of Baldessari’s playful artistic universe home! Arrange the magnets, display the sequence, or let them inspire your own creative experiments. Art, humor, and a little bit of chance—right on your fridge!
