Artist Statement for The American Mindscape

The American Mindscape began as an idea I had on July 11, 2021, in response to the historic protests erupting in Cuba while I was healing from a four-month coma due to Covid 19. Watching these events unfold, I was filled with both hope and anger, but also fear for the outcome of such a monumental uprising. The layers of writing and marks in the painting represent the millions of Cubans who have migrated since the 1959 revolution, and more recently since the uprising—a reflection of the brain drain that has occurred as people seek freedom and a better life.

This painting taps into a broader narrative, one that extends beyond Cuba and the United States. The words American Landscape appear within the piece, yet it speaks not just of the U.S., but of the entire American continent and about stories that bind us together— South, Central, Caribbean, and North America. It is a story familiar to many of our parents and generations before us. In The American Mindscape, through paint and collage, I explore the question of what it truly means to be “Americans,” engaging with the complex histories and migrations that shape our identities across this vast continent.

Through this work, I aim to capture the intersection of personal and collective memory, diaspora, and the enduring search for freedom that transcends borders.

This print edition in collaboration with AvantArte and Parlá Studios is a special release on the occasion of the exhibition José Parlá: Homecoming at Pérez Art Museum Miami.
