Picasso, Klee, Matisse, Giacometti: The Eye of Collector-Dealer Heinz Berggruen

Step inside the extraordinary collection of a man who knew great art when he saw it! What happens when one of the twentieth century’s most influential art dealers follows his own instincts as a collector? You get the remarkable collection of Heinz Berggruen, brought to life in Picasso, Klee, Matisse, Giacometti: The Eye of Collector-Dealer Heinz Berggruen.Featuring more than 100 masterpieces, this beautifully illustrated volume celebrates Berggruen’s exceptional eye and his deep connections to four giants of modern art: Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, and Alberto Giacometti. From Picasso’s groundbreaking works and Klee’s imaginative compositions to Matisse’s colorful paper cut-outs and Giacometti’s distinctive sculptures, the collection offers an intimate look at the artists Berggruen admired and collected.

Born into a Jewish family in Berlin in 1914, Berggruen fled to California on the eve of World War II, where he worked as an art critic and at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. After the war, he returned to Europe and eventually settled in Paris, where he became a renowned dealer specializing in modern graphic art. Along the way, he built relationships with artists, poets, historians, critics, dealers, and fellow collectors—connections that helped shape his remarkable collection.

Berggruen’s passion for modern art was deeply personal. Rather than simply collecting what was fashionable, he followed his own tastes and developed an extraordinary body of work that eventually became part of the Berggruen Museum/Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin. The collection was also celebrated in a major exhibition at the Orangerie in 2024.

Discover the artists, friendships, and discerning eye behind one of the great modern art collections.
